12 Curly Questions with author Dee White

1. Tell us something hardly anyone knows about you.
I did karate for three years.

2. What is your nickname?
Dee (if I tell you my full name I'll have to kill you.)

3. What is your greatest fear?
It used to be moths but I conquered it when I had children who were more afraid of moths than me - and somebody had to take the moths outside.

4. Describe your writing style in ten words.
I write about people, discovery and truth.

5. Tell us five positive words that describe you as a writer.
Honest, original, fast-paced, character-driven, heartfelt.

6. What book character would you be, and why?
Who wouldn't want to be Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and have access to all that chocolate?

7. If you could time travel, what year would you go to and why?
1870. I have a recurring dream where I was standing at black metal gates as a child in the 1870s. I want to know what was behind those gates and what the dream means.

8. What would your ten-year-old self say to you now?
Yay! You became a writer just like you always wanted to.

9. Who is your greatest influence?
My family, friends and writers I admire.

10. What/who made you start writing?
I wrote a poem when I was seven and was asked to read it at school assembly. It was the first time I realised people liked what I wrote, and how words can affect people.

11. What is your favourite word and why?
Serendipity. I like the way it rolls off the tongue - and my life is full of serendipity.

12. If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Neverending Story of course, but seriously, I think it would have to be the next Skulduggery Pleasant book which I am HANGING OUT FOR.

Dee's beautiful YA book, Letters to Leonardo, is a must-read. Be sure to visit her fabulous site for literary posts and writing tips, and she even offers very affordable (and free!) writing classes for kids and adults!
