Review: Boo and the Big Storm

Boo and the Big Storm is a delightful story of lost and found. Lovely little owlet Boo is swept away from her siblings by a strong wind. Boo, with her big, innocent eyes, calls out but her parents are away from the nest hunting.

We eagerly follow Boo on her journey and genuinely care for her and a safe return to the family nest. The tension builds when a strange ‘monster’, Farmer Goodman appears and takes Boo away. Where is Boo going? Thankfully we soon learn that Farmer Goodman is a caring man who looks after Boo and when the storm passes, returns Boo home.

This story is simply told and full of love and compassion and is sure to please. The easy, slow rhythm allows the reader to enjoy Boo’s story as well and admire the beautiful illustrations by Glen Vause. The dreamy colour palate and wonderful expressions of the characters adds so much to the story.

Author, Wendy Lawrence has a long-career in caring for animals and for the past 20 years she has been rehabilitating raptors and owls for the Northern Rivers Wildlife Carers Inc. (NRWC) in northern New South Wales. Boo is based on the Southern Boobook owl which is the smallest and most common of the nine species of Australian owls. Lawrence’s love and admiration for owls shines through.

This story would make a great bed-time read and please any animal-lover!
