12 Curly Questions with author/illustrator Aaron Blabey

1. Tell us something hardly anyone knows about you.
I know all the lines in the movie JAWS, I enjoy offal and I can play a number of musical instruments but choose not to.

2. What is your nickname?
My wife calls me Tinks but more and more people have started comparing me to Captain Haddock from Tintin. I’m not sure how I feel about it.

3. What is your greatest fear?
Not getting it all done.

4. Describe your writing style in ten words.
My books are songs – but with pictures instead of tunes.

5. Tell us five positive words that describe you as a writer.
I’m comfortable jumping off cliffs.

6. What book character would you be, and why?
Captain Haddock. He comes into money, has adventures and looks good in a turtleneck. Plus, I already look the part.

7. If you could time travel, what year would you go to and why?
1984. I would tell my 10 year old self to have low expectations of any further Star Wars movies.

8. What would your ten-year-old self say to you now?
Man, you were right about those Star Wars prequels, dude.

9. Who is your greatest influence?
You kidding? Can’t do one. Bob Dylan, Edward Gorey, Kate Mulvany, Francis Bacon, my kids, Stephen King, Tom Waits, my missus, Indiana Jones, Ronald Searle, George Harrison, Tibor Kalman, Murray Ball, Picasso, Billy Connelly, Saul Steinberg, Ricky Gervais, Peter Blake, the guy who designed the Millennium Falcon, William Goldman and on and on and on and on and on . . .

10. What/who made you start writing?
An unfashionable but utter belief in magic.

11. What is your favourite word and why?
Winter. Just is.

12. If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Not curly, Impossible. But for arguments sake – The Gashlycrumb Tinies by Edward Gorey.
