Review: Xander's Panda Party

Xander planned a panda party. Yes, a dandy whoop-de-do!
But Xander was the only panda. Just one panda at the zoo.

When Xander realises that there aren’t enough pandas at the zoo to hold a party, he decides to include ALL the bears in his invitation, but that causes trouble when Koala reveals that she isn’t actually a bear. Xander adjusts his invitations to include all the mammals, but once again someone is upset that they aren’t included. Finally Amanda Salamander helps Xander organise the perfect invitation just in time for a surprise arrival to join in the celebration.

The gorgeous ink and watercolour illustrations by Matt Phelan captured my attention from the moment I saw this picture book. They perfectly compliment the fun story written by Newbery Medal winner Linda Sue Park. The book is all about fun and friends, but there is information about animals woven into the story for those who are paying attention and this is expanded upon in a two page author’s note at the end of the book.

Xander’s Panda Party is perfect for reading aloud with lots of rhyme and alliteration that create a really engaging experience. A simply delightful picture book for young children.

There are teachers' notes available for this book.
