Review: The Little Book of Australia's Big Things

The Big Banana, the Big Merino, the Big Pineapple … we might laugh about them but we all know them, and deep down, we probably all love them! And this little book is a fabulous celebration of all that makes Australia's 'Big Things' great.

There are the fascinating facts … Did you know that Ned Kelly's famous iron suit weighed 44 kilograms, more than half his body weight? Or that Slim Dusty, winner of 37 Golden Guitar trophies (the inspiration behind the Big Golden Guitar), was the first singer to have his voice transmitted to Earth from space?

There are the activities … Learn how to make Choc-Dip Fro-Nana Pops while reading about the Big Banana. Or master the art of finger-knitting while unravelling the story behind the Big Merino.

There are the jokes … What do you get when you cross a galah and a centipede? A walkie-talkie!

And there are the pop-outs. Each 'Big Thing' comes with a paper model for kids to cut out and construct.

To top it all off, the inside of the jacket is a panorama of the Australian landscape, the perfect backdrop for the 10 pop-outs.

I advise every parent to have this book on standby for school projects, road trips or holiday craft. It's fun, creative and educational. What more could you ask for?
