Review: 71 Sheep Try Soccer

Let's face it, sheep don't exactly have a great reputation as organisers or thinkers. Or soccer players, for that matter.

So when 71 sheep decide to start a game of soccer, you can be sure things are going to get a little, ahem, woolly.

First, the ball gets stuck in a tree, followed by one of the sheep, followed by the ball again. And, each time the flock thinks the game can finally kick off, the dastardly wolf appears.

This is a super-cute picture book from talented Spanish illustrator Pablo Albo Guridi.

The endearing illustrations in a limited colour palette are simple yet so expressive, with quirky details that include a ball of wool for the soccer ball and the black sheep relegated to the role of umpire.

The playful story will appeal to young readers as they follow the flock's intriguing and elaborate plans to retrieve the ball and team mate, and evade the wolf.

It's a fun way to explore the concept of cooperation as the sheep reveal that working together and using our minds and imaginations are often the best way to overcome the unexpected challenges of life.
