Review: One Thousand Trees

This book is a celebration of nature. Written and illustrated by artist extraordinaire, Kyle Hughes-Odgers, it will wow you with its beauty and gorgeous simplicity.

In One Thousand Trees, Frankie sits on a rooftop in a city and dreams of trees. And for the rest of the book, dreaming of trees is what she does.

Beneath, below, among, between, Frankie explores the beauty of nature from every angle and perspective. And at the end, back in the city…

Well, I won’t ruin the ending for you, but I will say it will make you smile and inspire you to do great things.

This is a thought-provoking story that can be used in classrooms and/or shared with others to discuss the environment and our relationship with it (and impact upon it).

On the Fremantle Press website, you will find teaching notes for the book that will spark discussion and get kids questioning. The book can be discussed in the context of biological sciences, visual literacy, visual art and creative writing, making it extremely versatile for a range of ages and skill sets.

But also, and I think most importantly, One Thousand Trees is just beautiful. Every turn of the page is beautiful. The cover is beautiful. The end pages are beautiful.

Kyle Hughes-Odgers is a talented and award-winning artist, and to have a whole book of his amazing art is a special gift. If you see this book in a bookshop, check out the page where Frankie is ‘amidst’ the trees, and you will know exactly what I mean.

A very wise friend told me some books are worthy of buying two copies—one to read as a book and one to pull apart and put on your walls to be enjoyed as art. One Thousand Trees is one of those books.
