Review: Volcano

Volcano is another addition to a extraordinary and valuable series of non-fiction publications for younger readers interested in the world around us.

Filled with a sequence of facts that inform and educate, this collection has set the stage for a new encyclopedic type of book, accessible to readers of all ages.

It's a stunning publication that

follows the collaboration between the two talented creators of the award-winning, Iceberg, CBCA Picture Book of the Year.

Jess Racklyeft’s immersive and imaginative interpretation of Claire Saxby’s perfect minimalistic prose, is to be applauded, for describing an undersea volcano and its eruption would have been a great challenge.

She has captured the remarkable colours of life underwater against the darkness that surrounds it, adding significance and life to the creatures that float therein, and the corals they pass.

A double-page fold out creates a tremendous, vibrant fiery image of spurting lava as the volcano explodes.

Rocks pepper the jostling waves.

Then, the earth becomes still.

New life is produced after the settling.  Seeds sprout. Trees spread their limbs.

Stunning end pages reflect the bold coloured life within the dark sea waters.

Striking covers are as explosive as the content!
