Review: Mouse Can't Stop

Take one friendly bear who likes to ‘stop and smell the roses’, pair them with a gung-ho mouse who is always in a hurry, and you have the perfect set up for the humorous story that is Mouse Can’t Stop.

On an ordinary day, Bear and Mouse decide to climb a mountain, an amazing mountain at that. While Mouse races ahead, Bear decides to take his time. The more Bear tries to get Mouse to slow down the more frustrated Mouse becomes, and the more determined he is to make it to the top, as fast as possible.

Author, Beck Blake uses a combination of rhyme and prose to create a fast-paced, fun story about the adventure of this unlikely duo. The ‘climbing the mountain’ metaphor, though sometimes overused in the adult world, is the perfect framework for this story which is aimed at younger readers.

With a background in animation and a long list of graphic novels to his name, illustrator Shiloh Gordon has created a team of loveable characters that kids will instantly connect with.

His expert facial expressions and body language perfectly convey the humour and emotion of the story. The frustration seen on the face of a tiny mouse finally losing his cool is a personal favourite.

The excellent book design must also be noted. The text size and placement, especially on the rhyming pages adds to the frustration of the mouse and makes the reading experience much more enjoyable.

Mouse Can’t Stop is a joyful story that perfectly explains how the journey can be just as rewarding as the final destination. By slowing down and being present, it is possible to experience something new or unexpected. Not only are the best memories often made during these side quests, but sometimes new friends can also be found along the way. A simple message but one that we all need to remember in these fast-paced modern times.
