Parker James, social media content creator, in collaboration with Toonstar, has successfully transferred all the fun and hijinks of his shows into a bright and highly visual delight for his followers.
Whether you are familiar with the YouTube series or not, the reader will fall in love with StEvEn, an eight year old, highly imaginative, dino-obsessed young boy and his ever-patient older brother Parker, who is constantly frustrated by his young brother’s (often Dino-related) antics.
As an acknowledgement of the shift from animation to print, young StEvEn discovers he is now in print and makes an amusing reference to the fact that this will be a new experience for his beloved audience and he will ‘need to craft a reading experience around their needs!’
StEvEn and his older brother, Parker, are off for a day at a fun fair, and due to being deemed too small for a ride, StEvEn wanders off and amazingly finds a discarded plushie dinosaur. He immediately names the dinosaur Tatum and knows his brother will not be happy if he adds another plushie dino to his extensive collection. He manages to smuggle it home but when Parker does discover the toy, he points out that StEvEn, the self-appointed president and CEO of his own ‘Dino club’, could be accused of dino-napping if he does not endeavour to return the item to its rightful owner.
StEvEn’s efforts to keep Tatum safe until he can connect the dino to its owner or forever keep it as his own, results in a Cretaceous catastrophe. StEvEn goes from one crisis to another and every emotion leaps from the glossy pages in bold and bright illustrations. Parker, in direct contrast, remains calm in the face of each dilemma, as he endeavours to guide StEvEn to better behaviour and hopefully curbs his addiction to plushie dinosaurs.
This middle grade graphic novel is bright and colourful and has many laugh out loud, witty interactions between its characters. The relationship between the brothers, although frustrating more often than not, especially for Parker, is nevertheless a genuinely beautiful bond. And if you’re a fan of the show you’ll find yourself talking in StEvEn’s voice throughout the story.
Parker James’ successful transformation from simple StEvEn sketches on TikTok , to the production, in collaboration with the creative team at Toonstar, of his animated YouTube series and now graphic novels, will no doubt continue to increase the members of StEvEn’s ‘Dino club’, where followers of all ages connect over humour, inclusivity and a shared love of dinosaurs.
