Monsters, written by Jackie Hosking opens with the line
‘There’s no such thing as monsters, they’re only in your head.’ This
statement has no doubt been said by hundreds of parents as they put their kids
to bed and is the perfect set up for what comes next.
Jackie has used her expert ability with rhyme to create a
tale of what happens when a parent tells their child to think about something
else as they try to get to sleep. This little girl in particular tries her best
to think of happy, fun scenarios but those annoying monsters keep coming back.
Going by this premise, this book could easily have become a
scary story full of dark and troubling images (no doubt with a happy ending) but
instead Jackie’s words were given to the perfect illustrator, Katrin Dreiling.
Katrin’s unique style of illustration is just what this
story needed. Her monsters are the right amount of quirky and adorable. Perfect
to appeal to kids but not scare them. Her excellent use of textures and the combination
of digital and traditional mediums make this a book that can be read over and
over while still remaining fresh and interesting.
Monsters is a great example of when editorial choices
and creative partnerships are just right. The bright purple and yellow cover
instantly says Halloween but there are no pumpkins in sight. Instead there is a
well written fun story with amazing illustrations and a twist ending that kids
will love. There are enough books out there that are full of themed clichés. What
we need are more books like this, anytime books that just happen to fit certain
holidays.
