Review: Ollie's Treasure

Who doesn't love a good treasure hunt? Ollie, a cheeky little mouse, certainly does and is delighted when his grandma sends him a map.

Excited at the prospect of the 'treasure' (he's hoping for a truck, walkie-talkies, or a new game), Ollie sets off to perform each of the requests on the map.

Grandma's map is a sensory trail and Ollie has a joyful time following each request to observe, smell, feel, listen, or taste.

But when Ollie finally discovers his 'treasure' is a mere piece of cardboard, he is angry and disappointed. Then, he reads the note Grandma has written on the back.

This beautiful story from author and clinical psychologist Lynn Jenkins is a journey of mindfulness. Through it, Lynn teaches children about being grateful for the small things in life and appreciating the world around them, particularly their natural environment.

Kirrili Lonergan's vibrant illustrations add further warmth and playfulness to the tale, capturing the joy of Ollie's experiences with colour and humour.

The underlying message is simple and timely in a hectic and material world: Our hidden treasure is the ability within to make ourselves happy. And it's one we're never too young to learn.
