Review: The Waterhole

This counting book brings together animals from across the world, sharing their common threads: the need for water, and their dependence upon the environment around them.

The animals of Africa, India, South America, the Himalayas, North America, China, Europe, Galapagos Islands and Australia come together in this unique book of one to ten, drought to flood.

“One rhino drinking at the waterhole, two tigers lapping at the waterhole” – so begins this counting book, continuing along through animals, insects and birds from across the world. Each one shares their thoughts as they drink – some with stories to tell, others with not much to say at all.

The animals are given real character through these thoughts, as well as the illustrations that are classic Base: colourful, full of detail and with hidden secrets to find.

Readers also see the waterhole gradually shrinking with the hole in each page, until finally we reach a drought. This is an amazing way to teach children the concept of such a thing, as well as environmental awareness.

This is one to introduce younger children to the world of Graeme Base – a world they’re likely to enjoy for years to come.
