There is a wide variety of subjects and themes found
here. The book opens with Andy Griffiths’ ultimate shower experience gone
wrong. Gruesome but imaginative is a different take on the story of the three
pigs by R. A. Spratt. John Marsden presents a Choose Your Own Adventure with Captain Cook, and Alex Ratt reveals
the humiliation, digs and puns that come with having the surname Chicken.
The subject of coulrophobia – ‘the extreme or irrational
fear of clowns’- is the theme of Tristan Banks’ Death by Clown. We accompany Tom through extraordinary and
hysterical escapades until he finally finds a way to overcome his years of
fear.
My favourite, A
Perfectly Normal Thursday by Deborah Abela, introduces poignant and moving,
whilst humorous and entertaining events, that see an orphan find a home with
the strangest couple. Meredith Constain’s story demonstrates that dreams can
come true, when Sam is determined to enter the Best-trained Dog competition,
although he hasn’t a dog. Luck provides him with an unexpected alternative.
There’s a hilarious story of how the names we are
given can either make or break us, and how blindly following rules without
understanding them, can have devastating consequences when trying for the first
time, to run a cross-country race.
After the entries, there is a generous section on
the authors and the illustrator where readers learn facts about each
contributor, especially what makes them laugh!
