Review: My Supercharged ADHD Brain

What do you know, or think you know, about ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and what it's like to have it?

Authors Dani Vee and James Layton, and illustrator Ruth-Mary Smith, have created a fabulous picture book that depicts the wonders and challenges of a young child with ADHD.

As My Supercharged ADHD Brain says, "all brains are amazing", and in this book the creators have drawn on lived experience to help explain just how amazing ADHD brains are.

My Supercharged ADHD Brain encourages understanding, and will quite likely prompt further thinking or discussion of situations and experiences.

It's a gentle explanation of what it can look and feel like in various aspects of life, including in relationships with family and friends, when playing or at school, and being creative or adventurous.

There are comparisons, like ADHD brains being similar to rocket ships and popcorn machines. And reminders that daydreaming isn't a bad thing and doesn't mean brains are not working. In fact they are often so busy they're hard to stop. Supercharged brains can have lots of ideas and be great problem solvers, but they can get bored and need time to rest just like anyone else.

In keeping with the characters and subject, illustrations in My Supercharged ADHD Brain are vibrant and colourful, and leap off the page. The words and pictures are packed full of examples that show the strengths and opportunities having an ADHD brain can offer.

My Supercharged ADHD Brain is inclusive and celebratory. A recommended book for families, classrooms and libraries everywhere.
