Review: Higher Ground

A unique and stunning graphic novel, Higher Ground presents the issue of floods, the destruction caused by Nature, and the abandoned places flooding creates.

It focuses entirely on a family - a grandmother, two children, and a rabbit, and the choices they make.

Survival is utmost. As they move to the top of their apartment building, a shed becomes their refuge.

The entire building is transformed into an immovable object in the flooded waters.

Their wait for help proves futile and after many days, they realise that help isn’t coming.

A courageous decision is made to create another type of life for themselves under Grandmother’s optimistic and loving tutelage while filling the days with stories and activity.

Each day a new lesson is learnt regarding an area of possible need. Grandmother’s incredible storage of creative knowledge is inexhaustible.

The sea washes in a plethora of useful things that the family puts to good use. Nothing is wasted.

The abandoned city became a home for marine life.

The growing children receive a rich education in life and survival by their ageing Grandmother, preparing them for life without her.

This is a powerful book about self-sufficiency, how to use what you have by re-purposing everything; a lifestyle accessible and limited only by one’s imagination.

I loved this book. The beautiful illustrations in faded colours, the graduation of the story and the children’s lives, the constant change in lifestyle and inventive living.

An important theme in this book is the value of the relationship between the children and the elderly woman - what they offer to each other.

Stunning covers and illustrations throughout.
