Review: The AR in Sydney Harbour

The AR in Sydney Harbour is a new book from Judith Barker and Janie Frith who won a Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Award in 2019.

It takes “the various spelling patterns of the bossy 'r' (ar) sound in the different and various words”, and spotlights them on a journey around Sydney Harbour.

There’s lots to see on this exploration. Ferries are the main form of transport, joining other vehicles – tour boats going whale spotting, and seaplanes travelling overhead.

The tour begins at Barangaroo and moves on to other locations and activities like visiting Cockatoo Island, climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, rides at Luna Park, and the amazing architecture of the Sydney Opera House.

There’s also a walk around Kirribili, the Botanic Gardens, and Taronga Zoo. Finally, fish and chips are on the menu for dinner, with a view of Sydney sparkling at night.

Janie Frith’s illustrations are bright and colourful, full of recognisable landmarks and details. The people featured in the journey are depicted in a way that encourages readers to imagine themselves in the picture.

This is a creative way to explain a specific phonics concept, and Judith Barker has created a great celebration of Sydney Harbour and its surrounds while doing so.
