Sadly both the Author, Milena Lukešová and illustrator Jan Kudlácek have passed away but It
makes my heart sing to know that their stunning creation lives on.
The little girl in the Rain is the simple story of a girl
looking for someone to play with. As she begins her search she feels the drip of
rain. Soon the rain becomes heavy and she returns back inside to seek shelter. The
girl however is unaware that the rain too is looking for a friend and he tries
to lure her back outside. Unsuccessful and chased away by others, the rains
continues to look for the girl until finally they meet. Now dressed for the
weather, the girl and the rain spend the remainder of the day splashing in
puddles and chasing rainbows.
Milena has written a soft gentle story that turns a somewhat
ordinary day into a magical adventure. It encourages children to find joy even when things look bad and reminds us that friendship can be found in the most
unusual of places. There are no hidden agendas or morals to be found just a
softly written story. Something that we need more of.
Although the illustrations have a vintage feel, they do not
seem out of place or aged in todays standards. Is this a reflection that the
modern illustrator is perhaps taking inspiration from the past? I sure hope so
because Jan has added a spark of magic to her images that is at times lost in
todays digital world.
The Little Girl and the Rain is a reminder of times gone past when things were simpler. With everything today changing at such a fast pace, this is the type of book that needs to be celebrated. The perfect story to curl up with at bedtime that has timeless story that kids will love.
