Review: Sometimes

Nothing is certain.

Life fluctuates. Sometimes we’re happy. Sometimes we’re sad. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Sometimes we feel brave or scared or kind or mean.

But no matter how we are – how we’re feeling, how we behave… there are people in our lives who will love us, no matter what.

In this clever book combining opposites with unconditional love, Emma Dodd has created a simple yet loving tale. The book’s minimum text belies its subtle messaging and deeper meaning.

Dodd’s illustrations featuring an elephant mum and her wee charge are engaging and utterly adorable. Kids as young as the infant years will be drawn in by the strong image outlines, the clever use of visual texture, punches of featured colour, and the heart-warming smiling elephant faces.

Concise but beautifully rhythmic text lends literary punch to an otherwise visually-driven book. Lovely.
