Review: Stick!

Take one puppy, add a stick and a few other animals, and you have the making of a good book.

Cows love grass.

Birds love worms.

Pigs love mud.

And dogs love sticks.

All this is apparent in Stick!, a book of few words, but much enjoyment.

Follow a young puppy as he searches for someone to play with. He’s looking for a friend who will enjoy chasing sticks as much as he does, but seems to have no luck.

The other animals - a cow, a bird and a pig - are interested in other things. Eventually, though, another stick appears and the puppy finds someone just like him.

It’s easy to understand the simple expressions of the animals as they respond to each other, and the cute cartoon characters jump out from the bare, bright colour-blocked pages.

Joining the puppy on his search for a playmate is a great chance for young pre-readers or new readers to be learn the connection between words and pictures.
