Review: Goodnight World

Does your household need a new bedtime story? Then Goodnight World from the bestselling author and illustrator Debi Gliori may be just what you need.

While reading this story your child will be taken on journey saying goodnight to many things; clouds, boats, houses, animals on the ice and in the zoo. Some of these images appear on several pages linking the toddler’s toys to the bedtime journey.

The evening farewells are conveyed using verse. It is gentle and lilting ‘Goodnight planet, goodnight world. Peaceful clouds around Earth curled.’

Observation of the pictures in this book is equally important as the words; they lead to a deeper story. The illustrations show Mum taking the dog out for his final walk while Dad gets the toddler ready for bed.

And the final pages are heart-warming; showing the family’s bedtime ritual and finally the toddler is illustrated curled up in the arms of his pregnant mother, beside his father and the family dog.

Debi Gliori has written over 80 picture books including; Alfie in the Garden and Dragon Loves Penguin . More recently she released a picture book for older children Night Shift about coping with depression.
