Review: Tomato Sandwich

Every now and then, a little something comes along and turns you upside down. A little something, that just shows up to warp your mind and make your heart sing.

Tomato Sandwich is this little something.
Everything about this book is squishily delicious.

A small, twirly girl called Ottliy with magic fairy wings, a tiny little dog with carefree boldness, and a great big kind dad whose pants stay up I-don’t-know-how, all somehow just wiggle their respective ways into your heart.

Multi award winning Caroline Magerl has created this as a ‘wordless’ picture book. So, the reader is called to create meaning through their own interpretation of warm, engaging and scribbly pictures.

The story of Tomato Sandwich simply emerges onto the page as you continue to wonder and re-look and ponder all of the possibilities.

The illustrations aren’t defined and neat with lines on the edges – they’re messy and chaotic and they take you into a whirlwind of delightful, definite maybes. In fact sometimes, there are just so many small illustrations on the page that the reader gets to choose in which order they will run their eyes over the double spread.

This book is a welcome reminder to not colour between the lines. That you can follow the colour, or follow the scribble, or follow the moment.

It’s also a reminder that after you’ve been immersed in the magic and colour and movement and bright, shiny, sparkly bits, you’ll feel so much better that a tomato sandwich made with love, might just be the best thing of all.

This book makes everything taste better.
