Review: Animals on Country

Animals on Country combines education and fun as Uncle Kuu takes us for a walk to learn about Australian animals.

If you look carefully, you can see fresh tracks on the ground where different animals have been roaming around.

From the riverside to the trees, Uncle Kuu tells a group of eager kids about local animals, their importance to the land and their importance to Indigenous culture. He talks about pollution and the troubles that come when we don’t care for our land and our animals.

Written by brother/sister duo Victor Steffensen and Sandra Steffensen, Animals on Country is a delightful and important story about animals and culture. It’s also a fantastic companion book to Looking after Country with Fire, which explores the importance of cultural burning and the role it plays in caring for the land.

At the back of the book (both books actually), you’ll find a song to learn and spread the word about amazing Australian animals, and there’s also a QR code to scan so you can listen to the lovely tune online.

Recommended for anyone who loves animals and wants to learn more about the beautiful creatures that roam the Australian wilderness and their connection to Indigenous culture.
