Review: Ningaloo: Australia

This non-fiction picture book is itself a ‘wild wonder.’

NingalooAustralia’s Wild Wonder looks at the extraordinary natural phenomenon of  land and sea known as Ningaloo, and celebrates both the awe-inspiring and quiet things that make this place unique.

Penned by Australia’s beloved Tim Winton and accompanied by 100s of gorgeous, hand-painted illustrations by Cindy Lane, it’s a veritable treasure trove of surprise and information.

From itty bitty blind fish that live deep in the murky depths, to massive whale sharks in the glossy blue sea, Ningaloo features more than 50 species of aquatic and terrestrial animals and plants.

The delightful, soulful artworks along with text-in-boxes and longer slabs of facts and interest, will appeal to both beginning and advanced readers,

In fact, I’ll go out on a (rather short) limb to predict that all who turn the pages of Ningaloo will fall in love with this unique land and sea-scape. It’s just breathtaking.

It’s utterly appropriate that the last section of the book directs readers to a variety of active and tangible ways they can help to protect Ningaloo. A substantial glossary and index provide an excellent starting point for school projects and online activity.

An enticing book, as at home on a coffee table or a school library shelf (facing outwards, of course), Ningaloo will be trotted out and pored over, over and over again!

Highly recommended.
