Review: The Aussie Christmas Mix Up

The Aussie Christmas Mix Up is one of those picture books that may well become a permanent fixture – to be pulled off the shelf and enjoyed all year around, but most especially at Christmas time.

Santa has checked his list not once but twice and put the gifts in his bag. If only he was as careful when he was attaching all the tags!

This is Jackie Hosking and Nathaniel Eckstrom’s third Christmas offering together, and it is as delightful as the first two.

The book is an absolute joy to read aloud with clever, sophisticated rhyme that never feels contrived and indeed, sometimes makes you gasp with delight! Author Jackie Hosking is a master of the rhyming form, as evidenced by the sheer number of wonderful picture books she has published.

Eckstrom’s illustrations are both engaging and heartwarming. Created digitally, they are characterised by a compelling sense of movement, spontaneity and flow. His characters are funny and loveable – children and adults alike will need to resist the temptation to reach into the pages of the book to touch these endearing critters.

A wonderful, clever and uplifting offering that speaks to children with strength and boldness, The Aussie Christmas Mix Up is highly recommended.
