Review: Mr McGee

The newest edition of the first Mr McGee book is now in board book form.

Originally published in 1987, Pamela Allen again brings to life her most popular character of eight titles, the adventurous McGee. Someone who is always ready for anything.

He is unusual, full of life and misadventure, a performer and attention seeker.

The sprawling apple tree which covers McGee’s table and chairs, and his bed where the cat also sleeps, accommodates his life amidst nature.

Everything is adaptable for McGee who uses the low-lying branches as hangers.

On this day, after jumping out of bed and dressing, an apple is waiting on the ground for him to discover. He peels the skin and makes a meal of it.

Then, the most unusual thing happens.

Is it possible for things like this to occur?

All his characteristics come into play at once.

The whole town follows him in disbelief.

What happens to make the birds in the air and the people of the town, chase the incredible McGee?

Ideal for toddlers to be read to aloud, and others up to age six can enjoy this engaging character.

Pamela Allen’s trademark illustrative style fills the pages. Especially stunning are the close-ups of various parts of the apple tree, its trunk and its enormous branches.

The thick pages are perfect for small hands and the popular rhyming style used, can be transformed into a happy rhythmic song that children can easily repeat.

The extremely popular Allen has been producing work for fifty years. At ninety-one years old, her most recent Cock-a-Doodle-Doo! was released in late August 2025.

This is one for fans of the Mr McGee books to add to their fabulous collection.
