Reviews: The First Easter

With it’s happy yellow cover adorned with primary colours, embossed stars, people, animals, doves and little floaty things, this book is impossible not to pick up!

‘A beautiful book for every family who celebrates the Easter holiday.’

The First Easter, written and illustrated by Jess Racklyeft, is indeed a beautiful and accessible narrative, depicting the events and special symbols of Easter in a child-centric and compassionate way.

Using appropriate language (whilst still calling a spade a spade!), this gentle reflection on why we gift eggs and share meals with family and friends at Easter-time, is a warming and heartfelt rumination on this festival for all – religious or not.

As ever, Racklyeft’s illustrations are positively adorbs. You love the people with their tiny, surprising tongues sticking out and sunglasses on … and you love the divine smatterings of etheric atmosphere replete with subtle adornments and layering. And you absolutely love the people with their multitude of skin colours and coverings and facial expressions.

The text and illustrations are a perfect balance – not too heavy, not light – but absolutely chock-full of the peace, kindness and mystery of Easter. Bring on the new beginnings and family times! Spread the joy!

This book celebrates kindness and sharing, regardless of beliefs or background.
Just stunning.
