Review: Behind the Screens

Behind the Screens
not only offers friendly and timely information about navigating the online world, it also empowers and reassures young people that their choices and actions can help them thrive online.

Getting a phone? Get this book!

There’s no doubt the internet is a voracious, sometimes dangerous beast, which can also be a force for good, wonder and enlightenment. There’s also no doubt that we must handle this beast with wisdom and care.

Behind the Screens gives us a blueprint for the latter.

Fun (I use that word advisedly) topics like data collection and digital surveillance, algorithms, artificial intelligence, gaming/social media and being happy and safe online, are all broached with a friendly voice, sensible conversation and logic.

In fact, this book answers questions you didn’t even know you had – such as why are the owners of social media companies always mega-rich, how do I just stop scrolling and who can I actually trust online?

Alongside a plethora of useful ideas, the book’s interior design and illustrations are warm and engaging. Using just one ‘colour’ (blue), illustrator Aśka’s captions, speech bubbles and images are a perfect complement to the warmth of the words.

Of all the books that have crossed my review desk recently, it’s exciting to note that this work is just one of several excellent junior non-fiction books that focus on our complex world. The breadth, scope and vision of Behind the Scenes adds to a growing list of essential and accessible works in this genre.

Like its paperback peers, this book offers authentic empowerment – reminding readers that we are not at the mercy of evil overlords who control the WWW, but that – with the right information – we can be aware, responsible and confident about navigating this online world.

It's also the perfect size for holding as you walk, for reading on the train, or for just when you’ve got a quiet moment.

Written by award-winning scientist Dr Niraj Lal, Behind the Screens – How the Internet Works and How to Make It Work for You, is essential reading for all ages. Highly recommended.
