Review: Here Come the Cousins

Here Come the Cousins
is a joyful and exuberant celebration of family and summer holidays by the beach. There is love, laughter, and nostalgia by the bucket and spadeful.

Written by Maggie Hutchings and illustrated by Sarah Zweck, Here Come the Cousins tells the story of a pack of boisterous cousins who descend on Pop’s beach house for a summer of fun.

Bunk beds are allotted, heights are measured, and then it’s on with the swimmers and off to the beach!

The lively text and vibrant illustrations perfectly capture the experience of a beach holiday. Busy mornings full of swimming, sandcastle building, and rockpool exploring. Then home for lunch and a shady snooze or a book to read. In the late afternoon, it’s back to the beach for another swim.

The grown-ups try and keep the splashing, sunburn and deep diving to a minimum, but in the evenings when the family photo albums come out, we see that nothing much has changed. The cousins see photos of their parents sunburnt, splashing and swimming too far from the shore.

At the end of the summer, it’s time to say goodbye, and while this feels remarkably sad, we are left with the promise of ‘See you next summer!

Here Come the Cousins could be used to spark conversations about holidays and traditions and even inspire children to keep in touch with family who live far away. The beautiful seashell endpapers may encourage children to draw their own treasures found at the beach.

This book brought back many childhood memories and had me reaching for the old family photo albums and messaging my not-often seen cousins.
