Review: My Super Uncle

A striking cover and dazzling end papers promote the joy that fills this gorgeous picture book that speaks of love in its many forms.

Imaginative rhyming text accompanies vibrant colour illustrations which spill over every page, always focusing on the two characters - the girl and her super interesting uncle, with backgrounds of family scenes and the natural world.

The girl’s tone is full of delight as she lists all the reasons why her uncle is super - a hero without a cape, who plays dress-ups and never lets her down.

The warmth of this special relationship is reflected in every action together, whether 'he sings me Country’s stories or loves to make me giggle.' Colour also plays a big part, with digitally-produced images filled with expressions of shared joy.

This layered picture book has a lot to say. There are many points to start from and end with, leaving lots in the middle to share. The book will raise questions and therefore discussions with children regarding diverse family structures, inclusion, listening to others’ stories and embracing differences.

Dannika Patterson has written many other books for children including Jacaranda Magic, I Can’t Wait to Play, Heavy and A Cyclone Named Celia.

Noongar artist, Seantelle Walsh uses art as a platform for storytelling. She is a CBCA shortlisted illustrator, who draws on the world around her for her inspired creations.
