Review: One Knight Stand

One Knight Stand by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner returns readers to the wonderfully chaotic world first introduced in Lady's Knight—and it is every bit as clever, witty and delightfully entertaining as fans will hope.

Packed with sword fights, schemes, banter and a healthy dose of absurdity, One Knight Stand embraces all the fun of fantasy while simultaneously poking fun at it. Kaufman and Spooner clearly know the genre inside out, and the novel is filled with glorious intertextuality and knowing little winks to the reader. From playful nods to classic fantasy tropes through to the hilariously clever chapter titles—which each appear somewhere within their respective chapters—there is a sense that the authors are inviting readers in on the joke.

At the heart of the novel, however, is a celebration of strong female characters and the many different ways strength can be shown. The series continues to turn traditional gender stereotypes on their head, giving readers heroines who are brave, capable, flawed and fiercely themselves. Importantly, these characters are not simply 'strong female characters' in the narrow sense often seen in fantasy fiction; they are complex young women navigating expectations, friendships, responsibility, identity and love in ways that feel fresh and engaging.

Love, in its many forms, is woven thoughtfully throughout the story. Romantic relationships sit alongside fierce friendships, loyalty and care, reminding readers that connection and vulnerability can be just as powerful as swordplay and bravery. The emotional threads grounding the story help balance the humour, ensuring the characters feel authentic even amid the chaos.

One of the standout features of the novel is its narrator, whose presence adds another layer of humour and charm to the story. The narration helps create the feeling of sitting around listening to a particularly dramatic and entertaining tale unfold, complete with sly commentary and perfectly timed observations.

Despite its humour, One Knight Stand never feels shallow. Beneath the comedy and chaos are thoughtful reflections on power, perception and the roles people are expected to play. Yet the novel never becomes heavy-handed or bleak. Instead, Kaufman and Spooner offer something that feels especially welcome right now: a story that acknowledges real-world concerns while still allowing readers the joy of laughter, adventure and escapism.

For readers who loved Lady’s Knight, this much-anticipated sequel delivers the joy of returning to beloved characters while expanding the world in satisfying ways. For new readers, it is a reminder of just how entertaining YA fantasy can be when it refuses to take itself too seriously.
