In Oceanforged 3: The Sinking Ruins, Cori and her friends, Jem and Tarn, are on the hunt for the third Oceanforged piece, having already located the gauntlet and hauberk tunic; this time finding themselves on the secretive island of Halycon.
Cori is the 26th Champion and is tasked with finding all five pieces of armour to save her world. But it’s a task that, in true epic adventure style, is proving tricky and treacherous.
When the trio arrives on the island, the danger they are in is immediately obvious.
A sign proclaims a generous reward for information about anyone possessing ‘items of historical importance’. Although these items are not specified and Cori has not been identified, they know the warning is about them – a price on their heads.
Cori, Jem and Tarn have a knack for annoying locals and putting themselves deep into danger. But that’s all part of the fun – or at least art of being the 26th Champion or a close associate of said champion.
The opening chapter of Oceanforged 3: The Sinking Ruins has two functions. The first is to reacquaint readers with the three friends, where they’ve been and what they’ve found. The second to throw the reader right into the thick of the action, atop a tumultuous ocean that has the potential to end this story before it even begins.
This is the sign of clever writing. There is enough backstory in the first chapter to get brand new readers to the series up to speed (although you’ll obviously want to go back and read the first two books) but not so much that existing readers are bored.
Once again, Amelia Mellor has created an action-packed adventure that draws you in from the outset and keeps you reading – and hoping – right until the end.
For lovers of history and nature, there is much to explore in this third book of the Oceanforged series. Amelia Mellor’s inspiration is derived from pirate code and real-world creatures to the modern-day dire situation our planet finds itself in.
Like books 1 and 2 (The Wicked Ship and The Silent Island), Oceanforged 3: The Sinking Ruins is accessible fantasy born from the author’s keen awareness of the limitations placed upon some readers – from dyslexia to English not being their first language. It is great to see these issues – and that of declining reading rates – being addressed within this popular genre.
Bring on Book 4.
