Violet Mackerel is a special kind of girl, that one in a million who can capture your imagination and make every little girl want to be like her.
Violet has a theory. Her theory is that whenever you spot something small and special on the ground, you must try to remember what you were thinking about at the very moment you saw it. That is because whatever you were thinking at that moment is a very important and brilliant idea.
Violet calls this the 'Theory of Finding Small Things'.
One day at the market, Violet is thinking of wanting to own a small blue china bird, when she spots a small red button on the ground. Suddenly, it is vital that she owns that china bird, and an important idea like that needs a brilliant plot in order to make it happen.
This leads to a whole chain of events, including archaeological digs, making new friends and trying different things that might just lead to the way things are meant to be. And Violet learns some valuable lessons along the way, including the importance of generosity.
Violet really is a special character whose adventurous spirit and unique way of viewing the world is heartwarming. She is strong, determined, yet open to learning about everything around her. Really, she's just gorgeous.
Davis's black and white illustrations add a special something, making the characters even more real and showing realistic expressions and, most importantly, showing us Violet's big, wide smile.
A beautiful book for young girls, showing that the best things are the small moments in life. This one will go down as a timeless classic.
