Review: Boris and Boris Gets a Lizard

These full-colour books for early readers are so much fun, young eyes won’t want them to finish.

Before Boris was born, his parents used to go everywhere in their bus. But these days, the bus stays put and this trio never go anywhere. Boris dreams of going to other places, of leaving Hogg Bay, but his parents aren’t keen. They’re happily settled.

Until one day, the bus starts moving and Boris thinks they’re headed for great adventures. Or are they?

Boris is about to learn some lessons about where adventure can be found.

Boris has lots of pets, but there’s one more that he’d really love: a Komodo dragon, the world’s biggest lizard.

When his parents say no, he writes a letter to the zoo asking if their Komodo dragon would like to come to his house for a holiday. And then he sets about telling all his friends about the animal coming to stay with him.

But the morning that everyone turns up to see this impressive creature, Boris receives a letter from the zoo. And it isn’t exactly what he wants to hear.

What will he do now?

The newly released Boris books are so appealing to young readers, with their glossy pages filled with full colour illustrations. They incorporate text in many different ways, including speech bubbles, letters and projects, making them a real visual experience that kids won’t be able to take their eyes from.

Boris as a character has that unusual mixture of being a bit annoying but also really likeable. He wants everything, he’s impatient and he tells a few little lies, but we still want him to have his wishes come true. Really, aren’t we all the same? We all want it all but have to learn that frustrating lesson that we can’t have everything and there are others to consider. Perhaps we just want Boris to have his way so that, just for a short period of time, we can think it’s possible.

Joyner has created a gorgeous series with the Boris books – and the good news is these two are just the beginning. There will be more to come in June 2011.

Coming up later today - a VERY special guest post from Andrew Joyner, showing us how the illustrations of Boris have changed along the way!
