Don’t let the odd title of this book confuse you (would love to know who Doug-Dennis really is!), this is some utterly charming book that’s equally as kooky as its title – and a whole lot of fabulous.
One day, Doug-Dennis and Ben-Bobby are bored. So they go to the circus (as you do). When they get there, they snaffled some goodies to eat and head towards the big top, but when they arrive, Doug-Dennis had shamefully gobbled all that buttery popcorn.
“Hey! Who ate my popcorn?” says Ben-Bobby, and Doug-Dennis pauses in horror. Then he says something. A fib.
“Not me!” . . . before going on to explain that some monsters ate that warm, buttery treat.
Of course, we all know fibs quickly ball up and start rolling and gather momentum and become great whopping fat lies, and in the case of Doug-Dennis, that little flyaway fib hauls him up off the ground and carries him up up up into the sky, into outer space where dozens and dozens of fibbers are also floating around, caught in the out-of-control chaos created by humble fibs.
Doug-Dennis can’t believe his ears. Everyone is just talking and talking and no one is listening and he becomes very upset and wishes he never lied to his best friend. So what does he do? He simply says, out loud:
“It was me!”
Will his friend forgive him? Or will Doug-Dennis be forever banished to outer space?
This adorable book is not only funny and clever and punctuated with a fabulous array of speech bubbles kids will love poring over, the moral message is loud and clear and adorably hammered home, without batting an eyelid. Frankly, I just love that chutzpah.
I also love the illustrations which are an uprising of quirky characters, sorbet colour and design fabulousness that takes this new picture book from really good to great.
More, please, Dazza!
