Review: Just Like My Mum

There are some authors you just know will totally delight you from the moment you see the front cover of their latest book. David Melling’s books are always utterly charming, and I must admit - Just Like My Dad – still makes me burst into laughter.

The sequel – Just Like My Mum – is just as giggle-worthy (though honestly? not much beats that kooky lion dad; thankfully he also appears in Mum). In this book we meet our adorable little lion cub who introduces us to his mum – and reveals all the parallels between this lioness and her progeny.

Or lack thereof. In the morning, our cub wakes up early – just like his mum – though Mum is looking a lot groggier than our energetic cub. When cub is bored, Mum says “why don’t you do something?” (sounds familiar), but then when cub can’t stop doing something, she says “Just sit still for five minutes!”

Like most mums, our lioness doesn’t like muck or wet or boredom, but she’s sure great at cuddles.

Melling has a real knack for humour and relatability both in his writing and his gorgeous pictures. Just Like My Mum is yet another winner in his cleverness hat.
