Review: Daddies

Lilijana Praprotnik Zupanic, aka Lila Prap, is an award winning Slovenian author/illustrator whose popularity is increasing around the world. She has a passion for drawing animals and this book is full of them.

The book has a nice rhythm punctuated with fun animal noises, which makes for a charming bedtime story. It follows a little boy and his daddy as they explore the relationships between fathers and sons of the animal world.

There are rhino fathers, hippo fathers, and monkey dads just to name a few. All of them get up to wild shenanigans with their offspring- from stomping and swinging in the trees to singing in the night, and telling jokes. These daddy and baby duos have some serious fun together.

The book is presented with a hard cover in an oversized format perfect for showcasing the illustrations which are bold, chunky and full of vibrancy and life. What makes Daddies special is that it shows fathers and sons engaged together in pretend play, a theme not often explored in children’s books.

Daddies has something for everyone. It will delight the little ones and their dads. Moms will be pleased too as it will encourage dads to be involved in story time, and perhaps ponder the bond they have with their own children. I love watching my husband and our son as they snuggle up and escape into their own little world together.
