Review: Ben and Duck

The first thing you notice about Ben and Duck, other than the cool title, is the beauty. Author/illustrator Acton studied Fine Art and Art Education in England before moving to Australia to teach art to children. Now living in Sydney, this is her first picture book.

The beauty in Ben and Duck is not only in the truly gorgeous watercolour images, but also in the simplicity of the storyline. When Ben goes to the park, he feeds to ducks. Well, actually, it’s just one duck today – a large duck who quickly gobbles up all the bread.

When Ben leaves, duck follows him. Up the path. Through the gate. Under the hedge and up the tree. But when Ben jumps on the bus home, Duck can’t join him. Because he doesn’t have a bus ticket, of course.

But this doesn’t stop duck from tracking Ben down… and very soon the pair become fast friends.

A sweet story about friendship. Beautifully illustrated, warm and smile-inducing.
