Review: Games Children Sing and Play

The benefits of movement, music and play for children have long been known, and this beautifully-designed book features games that combine singing with movement - ideal for kids aged 3 to 5.

Written by two women who are clearly passionate about early childhood development, the book also has a team of talented contributors, including Maureen Curren, an international movement educator with 30 years' experience.

After several introductions on the inspiration for this book and the importance of movement and learning, Joan Carr Shimer provides an intro on playing the selected games, as well as teaching tips.

Games are broken into categories - Touching Games, Hand Games, Tumbling Games and Movement Games. Each game is then presented in detail, offering both lyric and movement instructions/actions. Some games feature accompanying sheet music.

Beyond the superb content, this book is a visual delight, with soft pastel pages and gorgeous graphics. A highly valuable addition to the early childhood classroom.

Valerie Baadh Garrett is a movement artist, educator and therapist. She is the Founder of The Movement Academy Project.

Joan Carr Shimer has collected and shared singing games and family dances for 40 years. She is a graduate of Spacial Dynamics Institute and the founder of Country Dance and Song Society's Family Week.
