Blog Tour: My Unforgettable Year

KBR welcomes author Adem Besim on tour for the release of his new young adult novel, My Unforgettable Year. This is a coming-of-age story about triumph and tragedy, love and loss, acceptance and letting go. We hope you enjoy this interview, which sheds some interesting light on Adem’s writing.

When did you begin your writing journey?

Besides the stories I wrote as a teenager, I began writing this novel in January 2012. I worked on it on and off throughout that year. I finally struck a motivational nerve the following year in March during my course, and got back to it. I finished it around May/June of this year.

What is your greatest joy in writing?

My greatest joy in writing is the achievement of creating a story in your mind with realistic characters, settings, and a plot, and executing it. I also love hearing that my readers were hooked on my work and actually wanted to read it.
What is the hardest part of writing for you?

I think the hardest part of writing is the doubt. The doubt of believing I can write a good story, the doubt in anyone caring to read my work, and little things like that. And also ensuring something works in the novel in order to make an event relevant to both the plot and the character/s life/lives.

What's the easiest?

The easiest is feeling happy and inspired to write a novel, and following my bliss. Especially when I have support!

What's next for you? Are you currently working on or have plans for future projects?

I have written other novels, which I think have some level of potential, but it just comes down to putting the right story on the right editor’s desk, on the right day!

Do you have any tips for writers about the writing process or the path to publishing?

My tips to other writers would be, make your manuscript the very best it can possibly be – get it professional edited, because no matter how good you think your novel is, a publishing house will only accept it if it’s in its best form (and even then, further editing will be required to meet the publishing house’s guidelines). Also, don’t give up – just keep writing and re-writing – even the most famous and successful authors out there started just the same way.

That's how I knew that this was what I was born to do; there was nothing else I felt more certain about.”
