Review: Secrets of the Rainforest

What a great way to engage kids in learning about the natural world!

On the opening page, as we enter the rainforest, we learn that it's bustling with life and that if we look closely we'll be able to spot many of the animals that live there. Turning the page, we can see a leaf. I wonder what might be hiding under it?

And this is where the magic starts! By holding the page up to the light, or simply shining a torch behind it, the butterfly hiding beneath the leaf is revealed.

On through the rainforest we adventure …

What's been trapped in the pitcher plant? What are the Golden Lion Tamarins carrying? And what's hiding in the ferns?

My daughter loved shining her torch to reveal the answers. She was also able to remember every page of the book when I overheard her telling a friend about it the next day, so the information she 'discovered' by torchlight certainly stuck.

This is one of several books by Carron Brown and Alyssa Nassner in the Shine-a-Light series. It's a fantastic concept.
