Review: Pancakes! An interactive recipe book

The cleverness of picture books for tots is having the ride of its life right now, with fabulously interactive and thoughtful books that put paid to electronic gadgets--at the touch of no button.

In Pancakes! this 'interactive recipe book' is entrancing for any age (some may have tittered over this middle-aged woman transferring cardboard pancakes to cardboard plates only moments before penning this review).
Toddlers, and even older kids (and middle-aged fans, too) will just love pottering around an imaginary kitchen in this sturdy board book.

Using modern, clean graphic design-style imagery and beautifully muted colours, we are at first introduced to everything it takes to make pancakes--flower, milk, eggs, butter, a whisk, spatula, bowl, et al.

Then, as we don our virtual apron, we turn the page and 'pour' the milk and flour into the bowl, with the clever use of pull tabs. On the following pages, we 'whisk' the wet ingredients in the bowl by turning a rotating image, and then plop the batter into the pan, again with the aid of some pull tabs.

The resulting pancake can then be lifted and flipped onto a plate, ready to gobble.

Then repeat the fun!

Clever, charming, beautifully interactive and beautifully illustrated and designed, this is not only a treasure for little ones--it's also a fine addition to any divine-picture-book-addict's stash (the stash of this middle-aged woman included).
