Review: My Body Belongs to Me: From My Head to My Toes

The topics of body protection and sexual abuse prevention can seem very intimidating to approach with young children.

There are a number of great resources available to help lead families through these conversations, while guiding parents and caregivers in answering the more difficult questions that may arise.

My Body Belongs to Me is a great resource to start from around three years of age, to teach children about their rights to privacy and safety when it comes to their own bodies.
The book opens with a note addressed to the grown-ups that summarises what to expect from the book, and the skills and knowledge that readers will acquire.

The story introduces us to Clara, who talks to the reader about her body and all the wonderful things it can do. Touching is discussed and linked to how different touching might make us feel (i.e. tickling can make us laugh, it feels comfortable sitting on Granny's lap). The story then goes on to acknowledge that sometimes we don't want to be touched and that our wishes should always be respected, even if it is a friendly touch from someone we love.

The illustrations are colourful and friendly, creating a safe atmosphere to talk about how children can respond if someone does touch them in a way they don't like, or without their permission. Clara is an accessible character and her little bunny companion can be found on each page as well, expressing similar emotional responses to Clara as the story moves through each scenario.

It does get a little wordy towards the end so might lose the attention of the younger readers, however it is a book that kids can grow into across regular readings to always keep the conversation pathways open.
