Review: Ready, Steady, Hatch!

‘Round and bright, and creamy white, amid the pumpkin patch, a clutch of eggs was sprouting legs. READY, STEADY, HATCH!’

Ten chicks hatch amongst the pumpkins and march into the world in glorious rhyme.

But wait, oh no, one baby chick has gone missing and now the family must rally together to find her.

This is a fantastically fun story about a family of cheeky chickens. There are laughs to be had on every page as the chicks explore their new surroundings, but the story is equally filled with heart as Mother Hen leads her brood on the hunt for their missing sister (even though some of them are less then enthused).

Author Ben Long delivers a giggle and grin-inducing story filled to the brim with humour, rhythm and impeccable rhyme, making this the perfect story to read aloud.

And David Cornish’s divine illustrations find that perfect balance of vibrant colour and white space to create an engaging visual narrative. The long-legged chicks have oodles of personality and their mischief making is a joy to follow as you read the story again and again (and you will).

If you’re looking for a fun and entertaining picture book the kids will love, look no further than Ready, Steady, Hatch!.

Funny, engaging and a joy to read, this book is everything a good picture book should be.
