Review: Say Zoop!

The author of Press Here and Let's Play, Herve Tullet, has written a new interactive story, Say Zoop!

It is essential to read Say Zoop! during an active time of the day, it not a story to read at bedtime or quite time. The story encourages the reader to  interact with the text vocally.

At the beginning of the story we are introduced to the blue dot, who says 'Oh.' Blue dot leads the reader on a vocal journey, exploring elements of sound.

During the story the blue dot's size represents the dynamics of sound. The dot's loudness changes as the pages are turned, moving from crescendos to decrescendos. The dot's placement on the page also changes the tempo of the sound.

The interaction between the words and the reader eventually leads to the sound of a crying blue dot. At this point blue dot meets the friendly red dot, who says 'Ah.' Now there are two dots and the reader explores the sounds they make together. The blue and red dots talk, make songs, undulating hills sounds and animals noises. Readers will delight in vocalising a myriad of sounds including bouncing, cars, birds and umpteen more noises.

The book's format is very appropriate for its audience, especially since the story encourages little fingers to move across the pages, touching the dots. The cover is made from the same material used for board books, while the internal pages are thick and glossy.

Tullet's books are simple yet clever. Say Zoop! is filled with sounds, bright colours and motion. It will delight readers as they test their voice to create a sound story. Say Zoop! will be noisy and produce laughter. Once the story is over, it will probably inspire many more noises from your toddler.
