Review: That Christmas Feeling

Remember that Christmas feeling when you were growing up? That special, tingly feeling that something truly magical was about to happen?

Dottie is waiting for that feeling to arrive. But, this year, Dottie, her brother, Jem, and their dog, Shortbread, are staying with Grandma and Grandpa.

The grandparents are doing their best, but it's just not the same. There's no Christmas tree, no carols in the park, and Grandma and Grandpa don't know how to make Christmas pudding.

Dottie is starting worry that the special Christmas feeling will never arrive, although her big brother, Jem, is sweet in his reassurance.

It isn't until night time, when the pair are out searching in the starlit garden, that it arrives. And this year, it's even more special than ever.

This is such a heartwarming story about the importance of family, especially at Christmas time. It captures some of those treasured Christmas traditions and the luminous illustrations lend a beautiful Australian summertime air.

Amanda Francey captures the bond between the siblings and their dog so lovingly, while YA author Lili Wilkinson builds the story in a way that brings a tear to the eye and leaves you with your own special, 'fizzy' Christmas feeling.
