Review: All Gums Blazing

Award-winning Irish poet and illustrator Alan Murphy is back with his fourth book.

Filled with funny, questioning, entertaining and thought-provoking kinetic poetry, this is a collection of 40 poems to share, re-read and ponder on.

Full of assonance, alliteration, and sharp word play that slashes like a sword and sends words shooting across the page, its free verse (there is some rhyming and limerick).

Subjects include phlegm, cheese, rain, a Hail to the Snail, string, Shakespeare’s Shopping List,  and the ever so clever, Toaster From Hell. The shocking yet incredible Skull will chill and thrill as its inventiveness spills into a poem created from words that are believed to be obsolete.

Murphy is a wordsmith. He chooses language with great care and is a master at stringing meanings into decorative poetry using metaphor in an imaginative way.  Weather Report: Cool Air, is a prime example.

This is a word-tasting feast for lovers of out-there, progressive poetry which tells a story, fires up the brain, and at times is complex but challenging.

Murphy’s Prometheus Unplugged has been more than equalled by this completely original collection of creative thought, with illustration that adds an extra lustre and uniqueness to every poem.
