Review: Ancient Wonders - Then and Now

Ancient Wonders: Then & Now is a book to inspire a generation of future world explorers. Each double-page spread brings to life an ancient wonder of the world, with the added twist of a modern-day status update.

Information on ancient rituals and lost civilisations, coupled with modern details, such as UNESCO World Heritage listings, restoration projects, and numbers of visitors, makes the reader feel that each of these incredible wonders may only be a few footsteps away.

Stuart Hill’s text provides interesting facts and informative glimpses into the archeological, historical, social, religious and cultural significance of twelve ancient wonders, ranging from The Parthenon in Greece, to Petra in Jordan, to China’s Terracotta Warriors, to the sunken city of Alexandria in Egypt. Readers interested in unsolved mysteries, ancient building theories, religious and cultural ceremonies, or ancient civilisations will be intrigued for hours.

Every page is richly illustrated in an eye-catching style. Lindsey Spinks has created layers of imagery with ancient representations, overlaid by modern realities. Added to this, is the book’s clever design, with flaps scattered throughout the pages, disguising, hiding and ultimately revealing more detail about each of the ancient wonders.

Whilst some lift-the-flap books may feel flimsy, this book has a solid construction, with thick reliable flaps, that feel sturdy and ready for many re-reads. The content and design of the book make it most suitable for older children to younger teenagers.

The information is a perfect blend of interesting stories mixed with historical details, just enough to engage, inform and entertain the reader, whilst inspiring them to find out more.
