Review: The Extraordinary Life of Michelle Obama

The Extraordinary Life of Michelle Obama, provides younger readers with fascinating insights into the life of this inspirational woman. Born Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, she changed her surname in 1992, after marrying fellow lawyer, Barack Obama, who later became President of the United States of America. Readers learn about some of the significant challenges Michelle has faced and how she was raised to value hard-work, education, equality and family, taking these values forward with her into every aspect of her life.

Readers gain glimpses into Michelle's family story, both historically and currently, including her great-great-great grandmother who was a slave girl in the early 1800s, her parents and brother, who have been such an important part of her life, and her loving family formed with her husband and two daughters.

Following the timeline of Michelle's life, we learn of her childhood and early years as a student, allowing young readers to connect in a meaningful way. Michelle went on to university and Harvard Law School and became a fully qualified lawyer by the age of 25 years, always striving to improve opportunities and equality for others. Michelle became the First Lady of the United States of America in 2008, when her husband, Barack Obama, became President, and she continued working in ways to help others.
