Review: Goodnight Moon

Maragret Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon is a timeless story that has continued to be a favourite with children for over 70 years.

It's gentle lulling rhythm with sprinkles of rhyme makes it the perfect bedtime story.

Little bunny is tucked into bed and begins to go through the nightly routine of saying goodnight to the rising moon and everything in the great green room.

Can you find a cow jumping over a moon or some bears on chairs? Brown intertwines the popular nursery rhyme of Hey Diddle Diddle and the fairy tale of Goldilocks and The Three Bears, as we say goodnight to the characters from the paintings on the wall.

What about a red balloon, kittens and a pair a mittens in Clement Hurd's bright and simple illustrations? Clues of where to look can be found on the alternate pages which are black and white.

As each coloured page is turned, shadows grow, showing the passage of time as the child delays going to sleep. Meanwhile, the little mouse begins its night by exploring the room. Like me, children will delight in finding the mouse that is included on each of Hurd's colourful double page spreads, sometimes it's tricky.

Since 1947 Goodnight Moon has been published in many formats; hard cover, paperback, board book, bath book and sometimes even accompanied with a plush bunny in blue and white striped pyjamas.

Other ageless collaborations between Brown and Hurd include The Runaway Bunnyfirst published in 1942.
